\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b After you've finished preflighting and climbed into your airplane, one of the first things you'll do is go over the BEFORE STARTING ENGINE checklist. We'll follow the checklist for a Cessna 172, but since every airplane has its own unique starting procedure, be sure to follow your airplane's specific checklist.
\par
\par First, make sure you've completed the preflight inspection and briefed the passengers. This briefing should always cover things like using the seat belts and how to open and close the doors, but could cover any number of things: use of life jackets or oxygen masks, for example.
\par
\par Next, adjust your seat, seat belt and shoulder harness, and make sure your passengers do the same. Test the brakes by pushing on them a couple of times, checking for resistance, and then set the parking brake.
\par
\par Now, you want to make sure all the electrical equipment is off. If anything is left on when you start the engine, you could get a surge of power and cause some damage. Check to see that the avionics power switch is off, and the circuit breakers are all in. Also, turn off any other electrical equipment, like the autopilot.
\par
\par Finally, put the fuel selector on BOTH. Even if it looks like it's already there, be sure it's locked into position.
\par
\par With all this completed, you're ready to go through the STARTING ENGINE checklist.\plain\f4\fs16 \tab \plain\f4\fs18

This model of Cessna 172 is fuel injected, and priming the engine is quite a bit different than what we've already covered.
m02s04b.jpg
Arial
Open the throttle a little and place the mixture in the idle cut-off position.
m02s04c.jpg
Arial
Prime the engine by turning on the master switch and the fuel pump and advancing the mixture until you get the right numbers on the fuel flow gauge. Once you've primed the engine, pull the mixture back to idle cut-off.

Arial
When it's cold outside, use a preheater and a ground power unit when you start the engine.
Arial
Oil gets thicker in cold temperatures, and a preheater helps warm it up, making the engine easier to start.
Arial
Since the airplane's battery isn't as effective in cold weather, a GPU supplies the engine with electrical power.
Arial
Keeping the whole airplane warm inside a heated hanger is the best thing to do when it's cold.
m02s06b.avi
Arial
Some POHs recommend priming less when it's warm outside, and not at all if the engine's hot.
Arial
Avoid taxiing for long periods of time in warm weather. This can lead to high engine temperatures.

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b The first thing to check when the engine starts running is the oil pressure gauge. If you don't get an indication within 30 seconds when it's warm outside, or about 60 seconds when it's cold, shut the engine off. If the engine continues to run without oil pressure, you could cause some pretty serious damage to it.
\par
\par Next, turn on the avionics power switch, rotating beacon, and the radios. It's important to have the beacon on whenever you have the engine running. On a noisy ramp, it's sometimes hard to tell which airplanes are running. The beacon gives a good visual indication to anyone outside the plane.\tab
